Kindergarten Transition
Supporting a Positive Start to School
Starting Kindergarten is a special milestone for children and families. At Mullaway Primary School, we understand that this transition can bring both excitement and a few nerves — and we're here to support you every step of the way.
Our Kindergarten Transition Program is all about helping your child feel safe, confident, and excited about starting school. It’s also an opportunity for you, as parents and carers, to get to know our school, staff, and the wider school community.
A Welcoming and Supportive Transition Process
Our transition process is designed to gradually introduce your child to the school environment through a series of orientation sessions. During these sessions, children explore classrooms, playgrounds, and learning routines in a supportive and familiar setting. They get to meet our dedicated teachers, make new friends, and start learning important classroom expectations and procedures through fun and engaging activities.
We know that each child is unique, and these sessions help us get to know your child’s interests, strengths, and needs so we can best support them when they begin Kindergarten.
What We Provide
Social Stories & Welcome Packs
To help children and families prepare for the change, we provide social stories and welcome information packs. These help familiarise children with the school day and ease anxieties about what to expect.
Kindergarten Resource Packs
Families receive a resource pack filled with fun and educational activities to help build school readiness skills at home in the lead-up to Kindergarten.
Learning Expectations and Routines
During orientation, we introduce students to important routines and expectations in the classroom and playground. This helps children feel comfortable, capable, and ready to learn.
Best Start Kindergarten Assessment
In the first weeks of Kindergarten, teachers conduct the Best Start assessment — a literacy and numeracy assessment designed to identify what your child already knows and what support they might need.
Teachers record their observations and your child’s responses using the Best Start software. A parent feedback report is sent home in Term 1, providing a clear picture of your child’s early skills and suggestions for how to help them continue learning at home.
Creating Connections for a Smooth Start
The transition period is not just for students — it’s also an important time for families to connect with each other and the school. We offer a parent information session and an expo showcasing school and community services, and opportunities for you to meet staff and ask any questions you may have.
We believe building strong relationships early on helps create a supportive environment where children and families feel welcomed, included, and valued.
